The Collection of Andrew Hooker - 23rd September

Start date Friday 11 September 2026 End date Wednesday 23 September 2026

ANDREW HOOKER

Andrew was educated at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester. Andrew joined Sotheby's in London in 1978, starting as an administrator and progressing to cataloguer in the musical instruments department.

Handling thousands of violins, violas and cellos passing through the auction house gave Andrew a thorough grounding in maker identification. Andrew rose to departmental Director, a role he held for the last seven of his thirteen years at the firm, travelling throughout Europe and the USA appraising stringed instruments for auction. By 1985 Andrew was the house specialist and often quoted in the international press on major sales.

In 1991 Andrew left Sotheby's and founded Andrew Hooker Violins. He subsequently moved the business into Christchurch House, a redundant Georgian church in the village of Rode, near Frome in Somerset.
